Shangqing Palace

Located at the east end of the town, Shangqing Palace is the place where the celestial masters preached, conducted the teaching and inheritance from generation to generation. It was first built in the Eastern Han Dynasty and was upgraded to Zhengyi Palace of Shangqing in the third year during the Zhenghe period of the Song Dynasty (1113). Through expansion since the Tang Dynasty and repeated restoration and renovation during the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, it has been developed into a grand architectural complex, with its scale topping Taoist temples in China.

During the thriving period of Taoist development here, there were busy scenes of incense-burning, celestial musical performances, and gathering of senior masters from all over the country. Believers flocked to pray for blessing, making the place busy and flourish. And the Demon-suppressing Well in the palace is said to be the birthplace of the 108 generals in the story of the Water Margin.

Now, with the completion of the second phase of the restoration project, the Grand Shangqing Palace has been open to the public, including constructions such as Fudi Gate, Xiama Pavilion, Lingxing Gate, Bell Tower, Drum Tower, Dongyin Courtyard, Devil-subduing Hall, Demon-suppressing Well, and Longfeng Street.
